One of our readers sent us an email early this week and brought up an interesting point that we thought we would publish. He asked to be left un-named so we will call him "The Gamer" heres what he had to say:
"It's closer to that time of the year when the likes of IGN, Gamespot and Gametrailers all announce their picks for Game of the Year. But really, think about it, what makes Game of the Year so important? Is it the prestige given to the games that are nominated? Or is it just a time for fanboys to jump into the comments sections of articles and post their thoughts about the games nominated and either agree or disagree with the final choice of game that ends up holding this so called important title?
At the end of the day, a site may say 'Here are our top games for the year and our final choice for GotY', but who cares, it's just a writer's opinion on what they think was great. Game of the Year to me is something that cannot be won, regardless of how many titles sold or how good the game looks. Think about last year, most sites gave the GotY award to Fallout 3. Sure it's a really good game (in fact, it's a great game in my opinion), but if you're not a first person shooter fan or if you hate RPG titles with a passion, then to you Fallout 3 is a title that wouldn't be of interest, and defiantly wouldn't be your choice to win such a grand make-believe title like GotY.
Do you see where I am going with all this yet? Sports fans would be more inclined to say games like FIFA 10 should be nominated, while fighting fans would be saying Street Fighter IV should be Game of the Year. I could go on and on, but won't.
At the end of the day, we all have opinions on what was the best game of the year, we all have different tastes. Some people say that GotY articles on Indie sites are just there to gain hits, and really, they are 100% correct. So don't be fooled, sites like IGN, Gamespot, Gamertrailers also love this time of the year, as it's those sites that gain the massive amounts of views and hence money with all their advertisements.
So who really cares about Game of the Year? I know the fanboys do, that's for sure. But remember, when all is said and done, your so called GotY awards mean nothing in reality.
What I would like to know as a gamer talking to another gamer, is what gAname have you enjoyed this year and what titles are you looking forward to over the final few months of 2009? After all, a Game of the Year award is only as important as how much gamers enjoy playing it. It's all a matter of personal opinion."
Cheers
