This week was a rather quiet week on all gaming fronts; however as E3 looms closer and closer rumours are starting to spread like wildfire. There wasn’t anything massively leaked or rumoured this week. The PSP Go! is the biggest Sony rumour at the moment, the rumoured “UMD-less” device, these rumours aren’t exactly this weeks news but they are really important to us gamers.
A new model PSP has been floating the internet for months now, the PSP2 as it were being dubbed was going to be the next gen portable handset, but people didn’t expect this until at least 2010, I mean the PSP’s capabilities haven’t truly been met yet, have they? Everyone were hoping the PSP2 to come along with touch screens etc and blow the competition away, but by the looks the PSP Go! will not be this iteration. The PSP go looks to be a bigger, thinner, slightly more powerful version of the already successful PSP, without its disk drive. Purely digital distribution, I’d have to say this is aimed at the hardcore gamer, a casual gamer is not going to use their bandwidth downloading games they buy over the internet are they. Also what going to happen to all the current UMD’s people own, will there be a trade in scheme online or will we just have to keep our PSP’s to play the “classics”? There isn’t too much news on this at the moment, expect to see a lot more as we approach E3.
In Japan the PS3 is rapidly growing to be the current console of choice. Its sales have grown a massive 288% from last April! This increase can be put directly down to the Final Fantasy XIII demo included on the Blu Ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. I think we can see this sales boost as things too come as FFXIII is released as a PS3 exclusive in Japan.
There was a very strange announcement for PAL territories regarding the Ghostbusters Game this week. Atari announced that Sony will have publishing rights for this game in PAL territories and the game will have timed exclusivity on Sony consoles and a PSP version will now be released at the end of the year. This version was rumoured to be cancelled so it is great news that we will be able to play a portable copy of the game. The PS3 and PS2 versions of the game will go on sale during June coinciding with the release of Ghostbusters on Blu Ray.
The last of all news and rumours this week, was the leaked email of David Jaffe potentially revealing a PS3 version of Twisted Metal that should get announced at E3. In his blog Jaffe posted a screen shot of his email with some words blanked out detailing a game regarding cars and violence, Jaffe was a co-creator of the original games so he may be attempting to hype the audience pre E3 ready for a big preview at E3.
So it seems we may be in for an exciting few weeks in the lead up to E3. Have a great week and keep gaming.
